Lord Jesus’ birth has become such a significant event in the history of humanity that we use B.C. (“Before Christ”) and A.D. (“Anno Domini” meaning, in the year of our Lord) to measure time.
Lord Jesus was a fully enlightened being who inspired mercy, love, and humility. The ultimate statement of Jesus that, “I am the only way” or “I am God” causes confusion to many. The answer lies in this analogy: when a river merges into the ocean, it loses its identity as a river. Thus, the river’s declaration “I am the ocean” becomes true. The individual Jesus is like a river, whereas the divine title “Christ” is like the ocean.
Jesus Christ symbolized divine consciousness. The ultimate experience of every founder of a religion is the same ocean of divine consciousness called Christ-consciousness, Buddha-consciousness, or Cosmic-consciousness.
Named after Christ, Christmas is a sacred day for realizing Christ-consciousness. Christ is the ultimate reality, meaning truth, consciousness, and bliss. Please understand: Christ is an experience, not an individual. The profound message of Christmas is to experience Christ consciousness.
Lord Jesus declared, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21). Therefore, if you wish to experience God, turn your mind within.
Lord Jesus taught, “God is love” (1 John 4:8). Where does this love arise from? Just as the Kingdom of God lies within, so does love arise from within. Therefore, love thyself. Whoever loves himself/herself truly loves God.
The most celebrated forgiveness text is Jesus’ prayer on the cross, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). What a grand example of forgiving behavior in human history! Forgiveness is genuine when given to even those who don’t deserve it.
Remember, Christ is the ultimate state of experience, not an individual. Only in the highest state of Christ-consciousness Jesus was in, can forgiveness be given. The reason is, at the Christ-consciousness level, the law of cause and effect (also known as the law of Karma) does not operate at all. Jesus refers to the law of cause and effect when he said, “whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). This means that whatever man sends out in word or deed, will return to him.
It is through Christ-consciousness that one can truly come to know Jesus. Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 – 1952), the world-famous spiritual master, said, “Prepare for Christ by decorating the spinal Christmas tree of your meditating consciousness with many new perceptions of the divine Christ, with ever-twinkling stars of wisdom and lotus blossoms of divine love.”
Christmas is a perfect time to rejoice and be merry with family and friends. It is a time to reflect on one’s understanding of love, forgiveness, and the Kingdom of God. It is also a time to turn within and truly experience Christ-consciousness.
The birth of Lord Jesus is an event that all of humanity should celebrate with great pride.
Hail to Lord Jesus. Amen.
